How should you dress for court? Dress comfortably but not too informal - shorts, halter tops, tank tops, beachwear and t-shirts are not appropriate for court appearances. Hats are not allowed unless worn for religious purposes.
Traffic summons (municipal summons and complaint) are issued by a Westminster police officer. The summons contains the court address and the appearance date and time. If that address is 3030 Turnpike Drive, Westminster, CO 80030 your summons is written into this court. There are some traffic violations that carry criminal penalties that will be handled in accordance with the criminal court process. These charges include but are not limited to No Proof of Insurance, Speed Contest, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Speeding 25 mph or more. Refer to criminal court information.
Initial appearances before the court on a traffic violation are held each Tuesday afternoon.
Beginning January 1, 2012 the Tuesday afternoon Traffic Appearance times will change to:
1:00 p.m. - all No Proof Of Insurance cases
2:30 p.m. - Last Initials A - L for all other traffic cases
3:30 p.m. - Last Initials M - Z for all other traffic cases
If you want to read that law, you may review the Westminster Municipal Code. Traffic violations referenced by the Model Traffic Code, are not available through this source, but may be viewed at the Westminster Municipal Court Clerk’s Office at 3030 Turnpike Drive, Westminster, CO 80030.
For your convenience, many municipal summons are payable in advance and if paid, do not require a court appearance. The summons indicates whether you can pay by mail or must appear. You must sign the back of your summons indicating you have read and understand the information and wish to enter a plea of "guilty" to the charge you were initially charged with or to the charges offered as part of the plea bargain. You may choose to either appear in court on the date specified, or pay the amount indicated before the appearance date. If you are under 18 years of age, your parent or guardian must also sign your summons. If you choose to appear in court a parent or legal guardian must accompany you.
Payments are considered a guilty plea and notice will be sent to the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicle on traffic offenses. Penalty points may be assessed against your driver's license. If your driver's license has been issued by another state and that state has a reciprocal agreement with Colorado, they will receive the penalty points. Accrual of too many penalty points results in the loss of your license.
Payments by mail must be check or money order. Payments in person may be by cash, check, money order, or VISA and MasterCard. Send mail payments payable to:
City of Westminster
3030 Turnpike Drive
Westminster, CO 80030
Please write your summons number on your check or money order and make a copy for your records.

If you MUST appear in court, or if you choose to appear in court:
- The first time you appear in court, you will normally be offered an opportunity to speak with a prosecutor. In order to resolve the matter without the necessity of a trial, the prosecutor may offer a plea bargain - a negotiated sentence in return for a plea of guilty. If such an offer is made, you are not required to accept it.
If you want to exercise your right to have a trial and require the prosecutor to prove the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt, the court will schedule a trial at a later date. Trials are generally scheduled two weeks after the initial court appearance.
- If you have been charged with failure to provide proof of compulsory insurance, bring proof of insurance with you to court. Your insurance company will be contacted to verify and confirm that you had insurance on the date and time of the violation. As a convenience, if insurance was properly in effect at the time the summons was issued, the compulsory insurance charge may be resolved before the scheduled appearance date.
If you decide not to pay the summons and cannot appear in court on the date specified, you may call the court at 303-658-2250 before the first appearance date to reschedule a new appearance date. You will receive a new setting notice from the court.
Failure to either timely pay a traffic summons in full or appear in court when scheduled will result in the issuance of a warrant for a traffic offense or a finding of guilt on a traffic infraction and cancellation of your driver's license by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicle.
