Emergency Services

The Westminster Fire Department offers a variety of public safety services.  The department responds to about 8,000 emergency calls a year, and roughly 70 percent of those are emergency medical calls.  The remainder of the calls range from house fires to kids locked in cars to hazardous spills and more.  Below are descriptions of the different types of services Westminster Fire provides the community.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) - The Westminster Fire Department has been providing paramedic level response since 1976.  Last year there were over 5,000 medical services emergency alarms. All Westminster firefighters are certified emergency medical technicians and over 35 are certified as paramedics. The City operates an advanced life support ambulance service with five full time ambulances.

Fire Suppression - Westminster Firefighters responded to approximately 140 fires a year. These fires involve structures, such as homes and commercial buildings, vehicles, and fields/grass/open space areas. Westminster firefighters are trained in certain firefighting strategies and tactics specific to each of these types of fires.

Hazardous Materials - The Westminster Fire Department is a member of the Adams/Jefferson Hazardous Response Authority and uses highly technical equipment to handle special emergencies.

Mutual Aid - The Westminster Fire Department has existing mutual aid agreements with 14 surrounding Fire Departments or Fire Protection Districts. These agreements allow the Fire Department to request assistance as needed for any emergency.

Public Assist - When citizens don't know who to call for a problem, they call the fire department.  These situations are not related to fire, medical, or rescue incidents, however are still urgent in nature and require assistance from the Westminster Fire Department.

Technical Rescue - The Westminster Fire Department has identified many areas within the city that may need the services of specially trained rescuers and equipment. The Fire Department provides on-going training and purchases equipment every year to be prepared for these situations.

Water Rescue Team - The Fire Department Water Rescue Team carries with it a long history of providing water rescue services to the citizens of Westminster and Colorado; the team was started in the 1960s by volunteer firefighters.
