Massive machine in place to tunnel under Federal

(Feb 20, 2014)

Crews on Feb. 19 moved a massive tunnel boring machine into place, setting the stage for drilling a stormwater tunnel under Federal Boulevard.

The tunnel boring machine is 129 inches in diameter and will be used to clear the way for a 108-inch concrete pipeline that will funnel stormwater from west to east under Federal. The tunnel will run for 280 feet. Boring will begin on Monday, Feb. 24, and run for 12 days to completion on Friday, March 7.

The tunnel is part of the larger Little Dry Creek regional drainage project, which is linked to the Westminster Station rail project located at 71st Avenue and Irving Street. The stormwater pipeline is a key component to protect the RTD FasTracks commuter rail tracks by passing the stormwater flows through the Federal Boulevard embankment instead of over the tracks. Without the installation of this pipe and the massive earthwork activities proposed in this project area, the RTD commuter train would have been subject to four feet of inundation during a major flood event.

This collaborative project is funded by the City of Westminster, Adams County and the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District.
