McKay Lake property purchased for open space
(Nov 21, 2012)
The City of Westminster recently purchased the 8.8-acre McKay Overlook property at the southeast corner of 144th Avenue and Zuni Street for open space. The property is located on the north side of McKay Lake.
Acquisition of the McKay Overlook property increases the size of the city’s McKay Lake Open Space to 135 acres, and helps protect the lake, wetlands and many large cottonwood trees that support a variety of native plants and wildlife species.
The city acquired the site for $630,000. The Adams County Open Space Program provided $448,700 through an open space acquisition grant to the city.
There are currently two homes on the property which will be removed within the next year.
The site will then be re-vegetated with native grasses. In the future, trails will be constructed to expand the existing McKay Lake Open Space trail system.
