Westminster Station/TOD project update: betterment project

(Aug 07, 2014)

Westminster StationThere are many exciting changes happening around the future transit-oriented development (TOD) area, located near 71st Avenue and Irving Street.

To accommodate all the construction that needs to take place within the next few years, the city’s Community Development Department has broken the workload into 11 projects.

This monthly update is one of an 11-part series to better know each individual project that will assemble into the future Westminster TOD area.

This series starts with the Westminster Station betterment project. What is a betterment? Regional Transportation District (RTD) has a standard design used for their rail stations in the metro area. In an agreement with the city, it was concluded that with all the enhancements proposed for the future TOD area, the station should be enhanced as well to form an overall elevated community vision. Currently in the design phase, FLUOR/HDR is the consultant contracted to produce the final construction plans for this betterment.

The Westminster Station will be the cornerstone of the TOD area, with a unique arch design at its core. Some of the prominent attributes associated with the station include an underground pedestrian tunnel that will guide commuters from the north plaza to the station platform, and an aesthetically-pleasing lighting design.

The Westminster Station features rail transportation that will shuttle passengers on a 12-minute non-stop commute to downtown Union Station.

RTD plans to open the Westminster Station in mid-2016. It will be located near 69th Avenue and Hooker Street.
