Smoke alarms save lives

(Oct 10, 2013)

"Smoke Alarms Save Lives" is the single most important Fire Prevention Month message.

Think your smoke alarms don’t save lives?

At 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 27, Westminster firefighters responded to a house fire on 97th Place that started in the basement. Smoke alarms alerted residents and they were out before crews arrived.

On Sept. 23, Westminster fire crews responded to a structure fire at 3:05 a.m. on Trojan Court. The fire started in the dryer. The family had evacuated before fire crews arrived, thanks to smoke alarms alerting them to the danger.

At 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 2, firefighters responded to a house fire on Xavier Drive; again the residents had evacuated because the smoke alarm sounded.

The list on stories goes on. Still skeptical?

In one of these recent fires, a pet had to be rescued by firefighters from the home after the family evacuated. The dog was resuscitated at the scene with a pet oxygen mask, but unfortunately with other injuries from the fire, he died a few days later. Without working smoke alarms this could have easily been a person.

Test your smoke alarms once a month, change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks.
