Progress continues for Westminster Station projects

(Sep 26, 2013)

Recent demolition activity in South Westminster marked another milestone in progress for a new rail station and planned redevelopment of the area

Portions of buildings in the KEW Industrial Park near 71st Avenue and Hooker Street were acquired by the city and the Regional Transportation District to make way for the north plaza and tunnel that will direct commuters to the boarding platform of proposed Westminster Station, the first stop in the Northwest Rail segment planned for FasTracks.

Demolition was recently completed and marks the start of construction of infrastructure needed for the station, scheduled to go into service in the spring of 2016.

At the same time, the Little Dry Creek regional drainage and open space project continues to make progress to clear the way for the Westminster Station opening in 2016.

Currently two of the three utility tunnels through the Federal Boulevard embankment have been completed. The remaining 108-inch diameter storm sewer tunnel will begin construction in November.

The Barnum Publishing Company building demolition was completed during the week of September 16. This demolition clears the way for a sanitary sewer line that Denver Transit Partners will be constructing to service the area north of the Westminster Station.

Additionally, the city and the Colorado Department of Transportation are working collectively on the Federal Boulevard bridge replacement project, which is scheduled to begin construction in July 2014.
