Leak detection can save on water bills

(Sep 18, 2013)

Westminster has begun a new program to help residents identify potential water leaks in their homes. Fixing leaks can help residents conserve water and save money on their bills.

The city’s centralized water metering system monitors home water usage and can identify accounts where usage never drops to zero in a 24-hour period. Constant water usage could indicate a leak.

Homeowners are then notified by mail to check for potential leaks in common places such as toilets, faucets and irrigation systems.

“These leak detection systems have been successful in other communities, helping people identify leaks and save some money on their water bills,” said Stu Feinglas, head of the city’s water conservation program. “Fixing leaks also conserves water, which is a win-win for the city and for the consumer.”
