Do you have an emergency plan?
(Jul 09, 2013)
Severe weather season is here. The city has emergency plans in place, however in a large-scale emergency, everyone has to do their part. Here are some tips:
- Register phone numbers associated with your home address at www.your911.net to receive phone alerts (commonly called reverse 911). Landlines should automatically be in the system, but you should also register your mobile phone to tie it to a physical address. You can also sign up for email and text message alerts.
- Enter personal emergency information on www.smart911.com for dispatchers to access only if you call 911. Medical conditions, medications, how many people/pets live in your household and much more can be entered and just may be a life-saver in an emergency.
- Have emergency kits in your car and at home. Visit www.readycolorado.com for a list of items.
- Talk about what you would do in an emergency with your family. Have young children practice dialing 911 and know what kind of emergencies merit a 911 call. Visit www.readycolorado.com for worksheets to sketch out a plan for different emergencies and for guides about what information everyone in your household should know.
