Mushroom Pond Open Space

West of Federal Boulevard at about 110th Avenue.

This 27.9 acre open space features the hidden 4.3 acre Mushroom Pond. The pond is not visible from any public street and not easily accessible by car but well worth the effort to visit. This open space is bordered on the east by the 6.4 acre Foxshire Park, and on the south by Legacy Ridge Golf Course. This open space was acquired through separate acquisitions in 1989, 1994 and 2010. A portion of this property was adopted as open space in 2001.

The golf course, park, and open space encompass a 48 acre natural area east of Federal Boulevard. Because of this large protected area, wildlife is frequently observed in this area, such as fox and coyotes and waterfowl including white pelicans. A trail encircles the pond which is ringed with trees, shrubs, and wetland plants. The Farmers’ High Line Trail abuts the south edge of the pond. Further to the south is an attractive grove of trees and shrubs, which are the remnants of no longer used pond.

The open space is on the site of a mushroom savory farm and company town which was reportedly the largest mushroom farm west of the Mississippi River until it ceased operations in 1953. The company produced Savery Savory brand mushrooms. All that remains is the water tower which was restored by the city and is a Westminster historic landmark. Learn more here.
