Allen Ditch Open Space

Allen Ditch Open Space – north of 80th Avenue and west of U.S. 36

This 5.1-acre open space is bordered by U.S. 36, Westminster Hills Park (80th Avenue) and the Westminster Hills subdivision.

The pastoral historic Allen Ditch hugs the western boundary of the open space. Huge cottonwood trees and other native vegetation line the scenic canal.

The U.S. 36 Bikeway linking Westminster to Boulder passes through this open space, next to the canal. An earthen mound next to U.S. 36 helps to reduce road noise.

This parcel was purchased for open space from Adams County School District 50 in 2012. Funds for the acquisition were provided by the City of Westminster and a grant from the Adams County Open Space program.

The former Westminster Hills Elementary School building was on the site. The city undertook environmental remediation and demolished the building soon after it was purchased.

The 2.36-acre Westminster Hills Park abuts the open space. The park provides a playground, tennis courts and a multi-purpose playfield.

The open space and the Westminster Hills Park provide a valuable neighborhood “green” space in south Westminster.
