South Westminster Arts Group at the Rodeo Market Community Art Center

The Rodeo Market Community Art Center (RMACC) is a local historic landmark and home to the South Westminster Arts Group (SWAG).  SWAG’s mission includes support of emerging artists, community outreach, public art offerings and initiating participatory and educational programs for all ages, abilities and backgrounds.  SWAG’s programming includes:

  • 2nd Saturday Art Walks, held every second Saturday of the month from 2-6 pm. Located at the Rodeo Market Community Art Center, located 3915 West 73rd Ave., contact info@southwestyartsgroup.com
  • Children’s Public Tile Project – a participatory program for children to produce durable ceramic art tiles to be used in indoor and outdoor public art installations in the Historic Westminster Arts District.
  • Sculpture on 73rd Avenue –The Sculpture on 73rd Avenue is an annual outdoor sculpture garden presented by S.W.A.G. (South Westminster Arts Group). The sculpture garden gives the community a vibrant and ever changing public exhibit to enjoy year round. The show is curated in a way that involves the public in the selection process for sculptures that will be displayed in the heart of the Historic Westminster Arts District near the Rodeo Market Community Arts Center at 3915 W. 73rd Ave for one year.
    Artists whose art is chosen to show in the Sculpture on 73rd Ave win a stipend for displaying their work and are promoted to patrons and businesses for the whole year.  Their work will also be considered for purchase by the City of Westminster as part of the city’s public art program.  For more information contact info@southwestyartsgroup.com
  • Historic Westminster Orchard Festival – This annual event takes place rain or shine on the last Saturday of September at the RMCAC.  Celebrating the agricultural heritage of the South Westminster area, this festival combines music, public art offerings and community inspired entertainment, all set in the Sculpture Garden located outside of the RMCAC.  It is during the Orchard Festival that the Public jurying process for the Sculpture on 73rd Ave program takes place.
  • 73rd Avenue Playhouse, 7287 Lowell Boulevard. In a partnership with SWAG, Germinal Stage a well-known and prestigious Colorado Theater Company has relocated to the neighborhood of South Westminster.   For more information on coming productions visit the Germinal Stage website.

SWAG supports the work of creative professionals in south Westminster and welcomes artists from all disciplines, including music, spoken word, film, dance, and visual arts to become a part of their organization and the growing arts district of which they are a part.

SWAG’s business office and the Rodeo Market Gallery are located in the historic Rodeo Market building, which was acquired by the Westminster Housing Authority to serve as a community center and revitalization tool in the south Westminster area.   The restoration of the Rodeo Market and SWAG programming have been supported by the State Historical Fund, the City of Westminster, the Colorado Creative Industries and other local sponsorships, donations and volunteers since 2007.

Future 73rd Avenue Community Art Center

Conceptual plans have been prepared to expand the Rodeo Market community art center to create more space for artist studios, art class space, a gallery and café. Next door, the Westminster Grange Hall, 3915 W. 73rd Ave., will continue to function as a community meeting place and performance venue.  The long-term proposal is to connect the two buildings in a manner that would preserve the historic street view of both while adding improvements on their north sides to provide space behind the Grange Hall stage for rehearsal, costume and set storage, dressing room and meeting space. A catering kitchen, restrooms and wheelchair-accessible entrances and lifts would be added as well.

In addition to the proposed improvements to the buildings, publicly owned land to the north and east will be developed over time as a park that would serve the neighborhood and the users of the two historic buildings. Examples of this integrated use include a wedding in the park, with a catered reception based in the buildings, or an art show that would use both outdoor and indoor spaces. The proposed café and artist studios in the Rodeo would use the outdoor area east of the building as an extension of the indoor uses.

No budget or specific plans have been developed for this future expansion.  Since the property is publicly owned, it is anticipated that programming will have a strong civic element, such as providing services for arts education, artist business incubation or some other plan that will emphasize public access and benefit.   Conceptual plans for the proposed building and park improvements have been developed in order to establish cost estimates. The project may cost $3 million or more, and funding sources have not been identified.

City Council Proclamation

On October 12, 2009, the Westminster City Council issued a proclamation supporting the initiatives of artists in south Westminster in establishing a number of new creative businesses, the Second Saturday Historic Westminster Art Walk, and promotion of the area as the Historic Westminster Art District.  To see a list of creative professionals working in south Westminster, click here

Artist housing survey

Westminster has completed its survey of artists' space needs and preferences. The final report is available for download.

In 2005, the City of Westminster began to study the possibility of arts-related development in the historic Westminster neighborhoods south of West 80th Avenue. Artspace USA of Minneapolis was hired as a consultant and the Artspace representatives visited historic buildings, met with owners and city officials, and conducted focus groups with lenders, developers and artists. As a result of this consultation effort, Artspace recommended to the city that it study the possibility of developing an affordable rental housing project that would be designed to serve the residential and working needs of creative professionals such as artists, musicians, dancers and other workers in the arts.

Based on this recommendation, the city conducted a survey of artists' living and working needs, asking for information on space needs, types of facilities desired, income levels, household sizes and other data. The survey was completed in April 2006.
