Spartan Deer

Location: Reed Street, south of Church Ranch Boulevard within the traffic circle.
Artist: Wendy Klemperer, New York City, NY (website).
Year Installed: 2011.
How Acquired: Funded by the developers of the surrounding development. The city requires that commercial developers install the public art.
Comments: This sculpture of a buck deer was fabricated from salvaged steel and powder coated with paint. The sculpture is 102 inches tall, 96 inches long and 48 inches wide.

The following is the artist statement from Wendy Kemperer about the sculpture: Presence and absence reverberate in the sculpture: a network of steel lines builds the form, drawing and redrawing the animal, ephemeral like the sighting of a wild beast. The surrounding environment penetrates the negative spaces between the lines of metal; the landscape itself is imbedded in the work. To make the sculptures, I search scrap yards for pieces that have been discarded and ravaged by life in the yard. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and a potential new life. The sculptures use the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being, with motion conveying emotion. Industrial refuse is transformed to elicit a visceral moment amidst our insulated, technological culture.
